Some random stuff

HELLO!

My boyfriend's little sister's son is half Peruvian. They call him little Inca. For his 1st birthday gift I made his mom this portrait since I am a broke art student. I really hoped she'd like it and she did =). It's the baby in his signature tongue-out pose with an Incan helmet on.

Maria Clara was the heroine of Rizal's Noli Me Tangere. As a Filipina w/ Spanish origins, I'm creating 5 paintings based on the Maria Clara dress. They will be sold at a Cultural Bazaar on Sunday with 25% proceeds going to my church children's program. They focus on the lacey panuelo and baro, the matching gorgeous accessories, the embroidered and paneled saya & the strawflower native to the Philippines. This piece in this picture is not completed as of now.

Here is one of the flyers of set I designed really quick for the event, with pictures from when I use to teach the children.

I'm also trying to start up a children's/baby's tshirt online store. It will be managed by spreadshirt and it will provide pocket change for me. I use to have a women's shirt line, but now that I've got better Illustrator skills, I'm relaunching this new store.
I have a long list of ideas! Here are some graphics I'm playing with:

A hectic quarter just ended for me a few days ago! Now I have a 3-week break. I will then be entering my 4th to last quarter. Through all the energy drinks, memorization, obsessive kerning, persnickety rag-correction, angry brainstorming, botched print jobs and sleep deprivation, I'm actually super satisfied with lessons I've learned and the sometimes horrible ways I had to learn them. Overachieving never lets me down in the end.

The other day, as my teacher and renowned creative director of a leading design firm looked over a final for another class. In that over class, the teacher is more experimental. The notoriously expert teacher I like to call the "Big Guns" of our department staff was polite to say he liked how honest and conceptually strong the work is. But he indirectly paid me the best compliment I've gotten to date by comparing my means of presentation to his overachieving tendencies as a student. It was strangely flattering to think Big Guns had seen himself in me at some point!

I really have been working super hard out of fierce competition with peers and myself. It's frustrating coming up with just Bs sometimes in Big Gun's classes but his ability to push me actually makes my work a lot better than it would've been, in the end. I use to get a 4.0 but since he and a new dean entered the staff I've been falling to 3.5 and above though I work hard. After getting president's list so much, it doesn't feel the same getting less than a 4.0 even after butt-busting work. But no matter what I shall treat myself to frozen yogurt!!!!

Even my marketing class -which was super left-brained for me-I got a portfolio piece. For my Experimental type class, I am thrilled that all the teachers with different design styles like my final. Lastly, I'm happy that I got a few portfolio pieces from my corporate communications class. On the last day of class, when I was done with all my work and my boyfriend was embarrassing me on my webcam by showing my classmates his nipple, Big Guns came over and told me he was going to hang my work in the hall. I've had work in the halls almost every term in the first year of my schooling but having it up now -when it's become so hard to compete for the small graphic design wall realty- is encouraging.

On a different note, I'd be happy to do corporate design for a brand I love after school is done. It is a goal for me to sometime soon get a 2nd internship (this time I hope it's paid) and build my portfolio to be more impressive. I have also decided that for the first years as a designer I will also take classes to help me transition to a grad program by the age of 28. I want to go into either the highly competitive field of medical illustration or the promising field of art therapy.

This break has consisted of a lot of confused relaxation. It's always odd going from "Hell Week" to a nice break. Painting, naps, reading, InNOut at the park at night, reuniting with my Starbucks usual order and my bestie, a walk at Landpark... I'd say the break's off to a great start!

The Wish Project

I am painting 100 small (3"-5") watercolor/mixed media pieces based on people's "wishes" for the star show I am curating this Saturday. It is a laborious project, but makes me happy because I see a lot of people are connecting through their wishes, like an invisible constellation! I have 54 pieces done, already. The installation will feature illustrations that I hope to appear very private- almost like scraps from a diary. I want to showcase a style of illustration I have not been known for. I will have them hanging together like one large force of hope. I hope that many will enjoy it. I am enjoying this project, already!

Here's some little scraps of wishes:

I've wanted to do this for a while.

I am a little over halfway through my bachelor's degree in graphic design.

I have great teachers who really don't mind if we doodle in class. Some encourage it because they know it activates a certain part of our brain, therefore allowing more of our brain to be functioning and absorbing the lesson! ( Yes, this is true. )

Here are some doodles I made in class...

You can probably tell what my favorite things to doodle are. Here are some more that I used to explore some themes for the art shows I organized, last year.

Sorry! These are very rough because my scanner is smaller than my sketch book and not that great at capturing. Also, I didn't want to make the pictures too large because I don't want them to give away too much of what is to come! Be excited! I am.

Work from Midnight Snackings Show

Midnight Snackings of Meanie Antoinette

hey everyone, currently, the artist I curated for last has my favorite and last painting but here's the photos from my last solo show. Here is my artist statement:

"Welcome to the world of Meanie Anotinette, where when one goes to bed hungry for dessert, one has some pretty funny dreams! Meanie's grandmother does not allow Meanie to eat dessert, after dinner. So Meanie dreams of feasting on these sugary delicacies to her heart's content (literally)!
Here, our heroine and her two bunny slippers are free to wander and sample a world full of fudge, Parisian macarons, mochi, marshmallows, cupcakes, frosting and icecream! Her world is inspired by a belief that every "grown up person" would be better off if they had at least one small moment of whimsy, indulgence and carefree silliness, every day! Have you had your cupcake, today?"

In Which Meanie is Sent to Bed with No Dessert
In Which Meanie is Caught in Tough Cookie's Cavern
In Which Meanie ambushes Mr.Delicious at Frosting Forge
In Which Meanie meets Monster Scoop
In Which Meanie Finds a Maca-go-ron
In Which they all have Stomach Aches at Fudge Falls

"I really love the sweet prints for sale in Tiffany Valdez's Nany Dada Etsy shop. Cute doe-eyed girls riding atop foxes and snails, what's not to love?" -TokyoBunnie

The Geisha show

Here are the paintings from my July show!:

The Enchantress

The Thief

The Consorter

The Altruist

The Untouchable

All the pieces have different fans and are based on "Creatures of the Night". The nocturnal animal in each piece reflect the geisha and I also have references to different nebulae in each piece. They are hanging for this month at Kamon Japanese Restaurant until my next group show, which is August 8th. The theme is pop art.

I will also be doing live art with my "co-hordes", Daniel Mendez and Grady Fike, at Kamon on the 29th of August.

June show- Kamon Restaurant, Sac

A lot of people came out to my show at KAMON JAPANESE RESTAURANT (aka bestest venue EVUUUR) and it was really a fun experience!

I had 4 walls, this is the new wall.

I was thrilled Michelle made it out! My new pieces are actually all based on her =) awww... i know. haha

It was a very chill showing, lots of eating amazing sushi (especially from the UHMATEZING $5 BAR MENU! but also in the restaurant!) and enjoying good hosting at the bar. Most of my sales were to new people I had met, and this made me feel pretty cool.

I sold 4 prints (two prints for the 2nd time) and one painting (Gemima, who had more than one offer). I was happy at my last show because all the paintings that weren't noticed before were noticed. This time I was even happier because every piece of my 23 piece showing had at least one admirer/relater! Yay! And there were lots of very enthusiastic and indepth conversation/debate sparked by my pieces, including one that lasted quite a while on Ness.

Fighter found a home with a US marine, which I knew Michelle would totally appreciate.

Been working 559% on my illustrative job! It demands a ton of time but it is so worth it!
I also still take odd jobs here and there to keep up with my daily expenses on the way to the book's completion. This is a reproduction of an old illustration for a returning commissioner.

It makes me want to surf!

So on this 3 week break Justin and I were going to bring his cousin through Southern California- especially since Justin and I have been blowing our minds out working and we need a break to get away from it all! However, before we had a chance to make out getaway, another more exciting event has occurred! His nephew has been born! We are all very happy for his sister and I am very happy for her parents and other nephews, who are also here to stay. This past few months have been filled with the cycle of death and life for us both and we are learning and growing, together. Life is a miracle.

My next showing at Kamon is July 11th, from 6pm-12am. I am organizing a group showing based on the theme of geisha! More news on that, in time.
